Vestigial limblessness in snakes
Previous Image | Next Image
Description: A phylogenetic history of snakes shows the gradual loss of limbs from their reptilian ancestors. Species in the superfamily Booidea (boas and pythons) retain vestigial hind limbs, whereas developmental changes in the colubrid snakes have eliminated even these vestigial hind limbs. Adapted from Cohn and Tickle (1999).
