Polymerase chain reaction (PCR)
Previous Image | Next Image
Description: During each [[PCR]] cycle, short DNA sequences that are complementary to the ends of the targeted DNA sequence bind to the DNA and act as primers for the synthesis of this DNA region. The primers used in actual PCR experiments are usually 20 to 25 nucleotides long. The region between the two primers is typically hundreds of nucleotides long, not just several nucleotides as shown here. The net result of PCR is the exponential amplification of DNA that is flanked by the two primers.
