| Description: (a) Akinetes are thick-walled, food-filled cells produced by some cyanobacteria. They are able to resist stressful conditions and generate new populations when conditions improve. As discussed later, the heterocyst is a specialized cell in which nitrogen fixation occurs. (b) An endospore with a resistant wall develops within the cytoplasm of the bacterium Clostridium difficile.
