| Description: Most of a fungus consists of hyphae that grow and branch from a central point to form a diffuse mycelium within a food substrate, such as soil. After mating, fungal hyphae may aggregate to form fleshy masses known as fruiting bodies that extend above the substrate surface. Fruiting bodies produce spores that are dispersed by wind, water, or animals. In suitable sites, spores may germinate, producing new mycelia.
