Description: The plant pathogenic fungus Puccinia graminis grows within the tissues of wheat plants, using plant nutrients to produce rusty streaks of red spores that erupt at the stem and leaf surface, where spores can be dispersed. Red spore production is one stage of a complex life cycle involving several types of spores. Rusts infect many other crops, causing immense economic damage.
