Description: (a) The body plan of the lancelet clearly displays the four characteristic chordate features. (b) Lancelet in feeding position, showing the segmented body with chevron-shaped muscles in each segment. (c) Pikaia gracilens, a putative fossil chordate, may have filtered particles from the water as it swam above the sea floor. Well-preserved specimens of this fossil have been recovered from the Burgess Shale deposits near Mount Pika, British Columbia.
