Description: The amniotic egg contains the developing embryo and the four separate extraembryonic membranes that it produces: The innermost membrane is the amnion, which protects the developing embryo in a fluid-filled sac called the amniotic cavity. The yolk sac encloses a stockpile of nutrients, in the form of yolk, for the developing embryo. The allantois functions as a disposal sac for metabolic wastes. The chorion, along with the allantois, provides gas exchange between the embryo and the surrounding air.
