Answer to Question 1

Kaplan was advantaged as an interviewer by her own race and similarity of experiences,
inspiring trust in the interviewees. She may have read things into their words because of
this, however. Locating respondents by asking others to identify them (snowball) tends
to lead one to a restricted type with common values, situations, etc., making the results
less generalizable, but its strength is in being able to locate individuals with specific
characteristics. Kaplan's stigma analysis allowed her to assess how much was being
covered up. The interviews probed several important topics. Analysis of qualitative
information is difficult, but the report seemed to be even-handed and thorough. The
conclusions section summarized the results and conclusions concisely. Extending the
study to future problems provided the reader with much food for thought.
