Answer to Question 1

Answer: This model postulates that observers of a victim's suffering will want to help in order to relieve their own personal distress. Helping is more likely if the arousal caused by suffering is strong, if there is a significant we connection between victim and potential helper, and if the costs of helping are small and the rewards are large.

Answer to Question 2

Answer: Help seeking tends to drop around age seven or eight, in part because children of that age are developing a more enduring sense of self and begin to recognize that asking for help may imply lessened self-worth. Help seeking also decreases after the age of 60, in part because adults begin realizing their greater need for assistance, yet are unwilling to public acknowledge this need and concomitant loss of independence and self-control.
