Answer to Question 1

Answer: A

Answer to Question 2

Answer: The things the text discusses as improving happiness include having more satisfying interpersonal relationships, being engaged in something you enjoy, and helping others. Having satisfying interpersonal relationships is related to happiness because being accepted by others makes people happy, because happy people have better relationships, and because people who are extraverted are both happier and have good relationships. Working toward a goal that is worthwhile creates the experience of flow, which is a highly desirable, pleasurable, and absorbing state. Because people adapt quickly to success at the conclusion of the task, being actively engaged in the pursuit of a goal creates happiness (more so than the achievement of the goal). Helping others allows us to be connected to others and feeds back into the ideal of having satisfying interpersonal relationships. In addition, helping allows us to view ourselves positively.

There can actually be a 25-hour time difference between certain locations in the world. The International Date Line passes between the islands of Samoa and American Samoa. It is not a straight line, but "zig-zags" around various island chains. Therefore, Samoa and nearby islands have one date, while American Samoa and nearby islands are one day behind. Daylight saving time is used in some islands, but not in others—further shifting the hours out of sync with natural time.
