- Doing things that decrease the chances that we'll get what we say we want
- Doing things that contribute to our own unhappiness
- Shooting oneself in the foot
- Doing things to ensure you never really have to try, in order to avoid the possibility of failure; things such as withdrawing, procrastinating, dropping out, obsessive planning, not trying very hard

Give an example. 1 point for any of the following:
- An example from the book: getting angry at one's spouse when needs aren't met; being aggressive to get what you want; blaming yourself when things don't go your way; over-indulging yourself when things go wrong
- A new example that is correct
