Answer to Question 1

Answers will vary and should include the advantage of the familiarity and comfort of
remaining in the family home when an elder's health is fading and the fact that many
elders do not want to move away from their community. Disadvantages include living
alone after family members have moved or die, and being unable to care for oneself.

Answer to Question 2

Factors that affect intergenerational relationships include personal contact between
older adults and their adult children, the type of assistance the elders may need and
their children's ability to provide it, their past history of love and respect, and either a
sense of obligation or affection toward the elders. Living nearby, needing assistance
that adult children can reasonably provide, and mutual love and respect support
good relationships. Living at a distance, requiring a level of care that adult children
are unable to provide, and a past history of conflict and lack of respect negatively
affect relationships.
