You are visiting your sister and her family for the weekend. You notice that her home contains four television sets, including one in each of your 3- and 6-year-old nephews' rooms.

They are allowed to watch whatever they want whenever they want because they only get network
channels and not cable in their rooms. After reading about the effects of television in general
and violence in the media in particular, share your concerns with your sister about possible
  outcomes in your nephews' behavior.

What will be an ideal response?

Answer to Question 1

Responses will vary and should include that television time reduces the amount of
time parents and children spend together and that many parents use it as a
babysitter. It reduces the amount of time children spend in social play and grades
suffer. Exposure to television violence can increase aggressive and violent behavior
in children and distorts and stereotypes gender roles.

Answer to Question 2

Intrinsic motivation comes from within a person who does something for the joy of
doing it without the need for payment or reward. Extrinsic motivation comes from
outside a person, behaving in such a way as to earn praise, money, rewards, or to
avoid punishment. Parents and teachers may help children become intrinsically
motivated by acknowledging their effort when engaged in activities, not the product
or outcome. Potential outcomes of extrinsic motivation include needing a reward,
payoff, or threat to motivate a person to act.
