Answer to Question 1

Experience-expectant brain functions are required for brain development to occur.
These experiences are present in the life of almost every infant. Experiencedependent
brain functions are not required; they depend on the child's individual
experiences. Each is important for brain development in that development may be impaired without their presence.

Answer to Question 2

Each of the five senses is present at birth although some senses are more
developed than others. Hearing is acute (which begins before the baby is born);
vision is the least developed sense at birth. All of the senses contribute to the
experiences that an infant has that allows development and learning. All of the
senses continue to develop and sharpen in the first two years of life.
