In the United States, newborns are not allowed to appear on television. This means that if a baby is born on a soap opera, for example, the part of the newborn must be played by a much older baby.

Why do you think that newborns are not allowed on the set, and why might
they not be welcome even if regulations permitted?

Answer to Question 1

The answer should include a clear understanding of the visual abilities of a newborn
through 4 months of age. Infants are born legally blind which means they can focus
only on objects between 4 and 30 inches away. By 2 months they can recognize
faces, and by 3 months they can focus on specific facial features. Binocular vision
appears by 14 weeks.

Answer to Question 2

Students will probably point out that the bright lights, cameras, heat, and noise of a
movie or television set would be difficult for a newborn to handle; newborns would
not be expected to respond or behave appropriately. Also, the typical newborn is far
less attractive than most people's idea of the adorable infant.
