Answer to Question 1

The cat associates the can opener's sound with food. Initially, the cat did not respond to the can
opener (neutral stimulus). However, because the sound of the can opener was repeatedly paired with
food (meaningful stimulus), that excites the cat. The cat now gets excited every time it hears the
sound of the can opener.

Answer to Question 2

In some ways the two approaches can be similar. Both would want to learn about the client's
upbringing and his or her relationship with both parents. The approaches would differ in that the
Freudian therapist would ask very specific questions about breastfeeding, toilet training, etc.,
focusing on sexual urges and desires. The Eriksonian analyst would be more interested in general
social interactions between the child and caregivers, teachers, and siblings. The Ericksonian analyst
would focus on specific needs being met and contributors to healthy social interactions.
