The embryo and fetus develop within a protective amniotic sac in the uterus. This sac is surrounded by a clear membrane and contains amniotic fluid. The fluid serves as a kind of natural air bag, allowing the embryo and fetus to move around without injury. It also helps maintain an even temperature.
