Answer to Question 1

Coercive cycles are patterns of escalating negative reciprocal interactions between parents and their children. Coercive cycles develop when parents do not deliver consequences to the aggressive behaviors of their children, thus tacitly reinforcing them. Childrens aggression increases, and a cycle of escalating negative interactions ensues. To break this cycle, parents should focus on their children's positive behaviors, apply discipline consistently, and set clear limits on negative behaviors.
