Cortisol is a hormone known as a stress hormone. In a study in which inhibited and uninhibited infants were exposed to a stressor, inhibited children showed elevated levels of cortisol, but only if they were insecurely attached. This implies that a strong attachment helps to buffer the effects of psychological stress.
