Answer to Question 1

Mastery of intricate motions such as walking requires both differentiation (mastery of component skills) and integration (combining the motions in proper sequence into a coherent, working whole). Before walking, a child must first master individual skills (differentiation) such as maintaining an upright posture, maintaining balance, and moving the legs alternately. Walking requires putting all of the individual skills (integration) together to move about the world successfully.
