Answer to Question 1

Early maturation can be harmful for girls and lead to less self-confidence, being less popular, depression, behavior problems and smoking and drinking. However, when early-maturing girls have warm, supportive parents, they are less likely to suffer the harmful consequences of early maturation. Early maturation can be harmful for boys and put them at risk for depression, substance abuse, and sexual activity. However, the effects of early maturation are weaker for boys than they are for girls. For both boys and girls, maturing late poses few risks. Late-maturing girls fare well; late-maturing boys are at somewhat greater risk for depression.
