Answer to Question 1

Those couples who do not have a religious preference or who do not hold strong religious beliefs have higher divorce rates than those couples who do. For example, a number of researchers in the United States have found that spouses who share religiosity in their marriage have higher levels of marital happiness and are at a lower risk of divorce. Similar findings have been noted in Australia, Britain, and Canada. Couples who share similar backgrounds, values and beliefs, are at lower risk for marital instability. Likewise, those who share religious beliefs are at lower risk for marital instability.
