Answer to Question 1

Answer: True

Answer to Question 2

While young (preschool aged) children typically see death as a magical, sudden, and temporary event, by the time they reach A.J.'s age they understand the finality and permanence of death. Provided that A.J. has a loving system of supportive family members who are honest with him, allow him to ask questions and answer them, and do not use fantastic, euphemistic language, there is no reason to believe that he must experience long-term, enduring problems as a result of the loss. A.J. should also be encouraged not to feel badly about feeling sad, and he should be permitted to attend the funeral or having a private viewing if so desired.

Meadow is college-aged, and the research suggests that the death of someone close to them is not uncommon for people at this age. Meadow may have difficulty dealing with the loss, particularly if it is her first encounter with death. She may display a wide variety of symptoms, including chronic illness, enduring guilt, low self-esteem, poor performance in school and at work, substance abuse, problems in relationships, and suicidal thinking.

Tony will have dealt with the premature death of his spouse, which has enormous potential to be traumatic to him. He will likely lament the fact that his wife was cheated out of her future. He may find it unthinkable that he is a widower at such a young age, and feel an intense need to stay connected to his late wife. He will have to deal with issues of continuing to raise his children alone, thinking about his future without his wife, considering relationships and life options, and moving forward. The important thing for Tony will be to make meaning of the death.
