The student should indicate that researchers Masters and Johnson identified four types of affairs. These types include hedonistic affairs, marriage maintenance affairs, intimacy reduction affairs and reactive affairs. Each of these affairs occurs for a different reason. The hedonistic affair is for fun and excitement. The marriage maintenance is to fulfill a need due to an unhappy marriage. The intimacy reduction affair is to prevent a spouse from becoming too intimate with their partner. The reactive affair occurs in middle age as an assurance of one's attractiveness to the opposite sex.
