In order to test the accuracy of a speedometer, the vehicle is driven on the interstate so the speedometer reports a constant speed of 60 MPH. A passenger measures the time it takes to travel between mile markers, and finds it takes 63 seconds to travel one mile. The current speedometer gear has 20 teeth. Should it be replaced? If so, how many teeth should a new gear have?

The 2.73:1 differential in a sports car is replaced with a 3.55:1 differential. The old speedometer gear has 27 teeth. How many teeth should a replacement gear have to account for the speedometer error created by this differential change?
