2. The development of train systems in the nineteenth century moved travelers longer distances, but with increased speeds, trains required more advanced bridge design, such as the double span Maidenhead Railroad Bridge in England.
3. The volume of air travel today has increased demand for new airport designs and specialized engineering to create sites where land is scarce or prone to earthquakes. The artificial island engineered at Osaka, Japan, and Renzo Piano's advanced architectural design of the new airport complex there are remarkably beautiful and successful solutions.
