Answer: The ideal answer should include:
1. Van Gogh wanted to express the idea that the caf was a place where one could ruin oneself or go madit was a place comparable to the devil's furnace.
2. He used clashing colors of red and green that were not locally true.
3. He felt that these clashing colors of red and green expressed the terrible passions of humanity.
4. He wrote of his intentions in a letter to his brother.

Answer to Question 2

Answer: They are the surfaces that directly reflect the light and are typically rendered in white. They contrast with the very dark shadows used in the technique.
