In a covenant marriage, legal separation from a spouse can take place only after the couple undergoes joint marital counseling. In addition, one or more parties must prove that the other committed one or more marital violations.

The spouse must prove one of the following:
- That a spouse committed adultery
- A spouse committed a felony that results in imprisonment or a death sentence
- That he or she had been abandoned for at least one full year
- That domestic violence or sexual abuse was perpetrated against a spouse or a child
- That a spouse is habitually abusing drugs or alcohol
- That a spouse is inflicting continuous mental cruelty

Answer to Question 2

We tend to marry for reasons that benefit ourselves, rather than for reasons that benefit the society at large, such as found in collectivist cultures. Today, in our contemporary culture, we still typically marry because we are in love.
