(1) Grandparenting has become a role distinct from parenting because grandparents are now less likely to have their own children still living in the home; (2) Grandparents are healthier and better educated, and have greater economic security; (3) Grandparents, and grandfathers in particular, are now more likely to recognize the importance of having direct emotional involvement with young children; (4) Grandparents and their grandchildren can more easily travel long distances and communicate by telephone or computer.
