Answer to Question 1

Predicate agreement means that a predicate must agree with its simple subject in number and
in person. This statement is the basic rule of agreement for all sentences. Remember, a
complete predicate includes a complete verb, its complement, and any modifiers. Generally
speaking, the complete predicate contains the complete verb and all the words that come after
it.
a) The verb within this complete predicate must agree with the subject of the sentence in both
number and person.
i) Jim Wisenberg wants to approve the proposal Monday. The verb wants agrees with the
subject, Jim Wisenberg both are singular.
ii) Two managers want to approve the proposal Monday. Now the subject is the plural,
managers. The plural form of the verb, want is correct.
b) If the complete predicate includes a pronoun that refers to the subject, that pronoun also
must agree with the subject in number.
i) Mrs. Redmond is eager to receive her cash bonus. In this sentence, her agrees with the
singular subject, Mrs. Redmond.
ii) Mr. and Mrs. Redmond are eager to receive their cash bonuses. In this sentence, their
agrees with the plural subject, Mr. and Mrs. Redmond.

Answer to Question 2

A transitive verb is a verb that has an object or a receiver of the verb's action. To find that
object, say the verb and ask What? or Whom? The answer to that question is the direct
object. If a direct object follows a verb, that verb is transitive. Example: Laura accepted Ken's
gift. Say the verb: accepted. Ask What? or Whom? Accepted what?
