The intimate status requires partners in a relationship to experience an equal balance of power (equity). When there is an imbalance of power with one partner dominating, the partner being dominated feels a subsequent loss of autonomy and sense of individual identity. Because of this imbalance of power, a relationship may appear to have depth and commitment, yet it cannot reach the full status of intimate.
