Answer to Question 1

A major reason for the high percentage of never-married black women is a shortage of marriageable African American men. Deteriorating employment conditions, especially in urban areas, often discourage young African American men from getting married. Occupational hazards in dangerous jobs have claimed the lives of many black men. African American women are more likely to attend and graduate from college than their male peers and hence are seeking better educated husbands. Many middle-class black men are already married, however, and most college-educated black women are reluctant to marry down.

Answer to Question 2

This is partially backed up by the fact that early grandfather clocks displayed IIII for the number 4 instead of IV. Early clockmakers apparently thought that the IIII balanced out the VIII (used for the number 8) on the clock face and that it just looked better.
