The Poisson distribution is a discrete probability distribution for an event occurring over time with a low probability of success.

(1) There are two or more consecutive trials; (2) in each trial there are just two possible outcomes, usually denoted as success or failure; (3) The trials are statistically independent; (4) The probability of a success remains the same from one trial to the next.
