Clusters can be naturally occurring designations, such as counties, election districts, city blocks, apartment buildings, or families. Cluster sampling methods can be more cost-effective than simple random sampling methods, particularly if the population is spread over a wide geographic region. However, cluster sampling methods tend to be less efficient than both simple random sampling methods and stratified sampling methods, and often require a larger overall sample size to obtain results as precise as those obtained from the more efficient procedures.
