Progressive loss of neurons with atrophy of the cerebral cortex; development of neurofibrillary tangles from the degenerative changes of the neurofilaments located within the cytoplasm of the neurons; presence of neuritic plaques, which are masses of broken, thickened nerve filaments that surround an acellular protein material, beta amyloid. The greater the number of neurofibrillary tangles and neuritic plaques, the more severe the disease is.
