Answer: A fingerstick is commonly used to collect blood for such determinations. The health care worker may either collect blood in a plastic hematocrit tube for centrifuging and reading, measure hemoglobin spectrophotometrica lly, or use the copper sulfate method, in which the hemoglobin is qualitatively determined. The hematocrit value must be no less than 38 percent for donors and the hemoglobin value must be no less than 12.5 g/dL.
