Answer to Question 1

ANS: A
Severe anemia causes a right shift of the oxygen dissociation curve. This means that the affinity of hemoglobin for oxygen is less, so more oxygen will be released to tissue (more effective delivery of oxygen). Alkalosis (increased pH), Hb F, and decreased levels of 2,3-BPG all shift the curve to the left.

Answer to Question 2

ANS: D
Each heme group is capable of carrying one molecule of oxygen. Because four heme groups exist in one molecule of hemoglobin, each hemoglobin molecule can carry four molecules of oxygen.
