Answer to Question 1

Generally, a new patient is one who has not been seen in the medical office by any of the providers in the same specialty within the previous 3 years. An established patient is one who has been seen by one of the providers in the same specialty within the previous 3 years. This rule applies when billing patients' health insurance plans and is important to note when assigning billing codes to patient visits. Insurance plans consider a patient to be established, even if the patient was seen by a different provider in the practice, if the previous visit was within the previous3 years.
