When spontaneous atrial depolarization does not occur within a preset interval, the atrial pulse generator fires and stimulates atrial depolarization at a preset rate. The pacemaker is programmed to wait, simulating the normal delay in conduction through the AV node (the PR interval). The artificial or electronic PR interval is referred to as an AV interval.
