Portal hypertension can lead to the development of esophageal varices, splenomegaly, hemorrhoids, and caput medusae. Portal hypertension does not lead to gastritis or gallstone formation.

Answer to Question 2

1
Osteomalacia is a metabolic disease that causes poor and delayed mineralization of the bone cells in mature bones. The main cause of osteomalacia is a vitamin D deficiency. Osteomalacia presents with generalized skeletal pain and pain in the hips, ribs, and feet. Paget's disease is a chronic bone disorder with no definitive cure. Osteomyelitis is a serious infection of the bone. Osteosarcoma is the most common type of primary bone cancer.

Bisphosphonates were first developed in the nineteenth century. They were first investigated for use in disorders of bone metabolism in the 1960s. Dogs have been used in studies to detect various cancers in human subjects. They have been trained to sniff breath samples from humans that were collected by having them breathe into special tubes. These people included 55 lung cancer patients, 31 breast cancer patients, and 83 cancer-free patients. The dogs detected 54 of the 55 lung cancer patients as having cancer, detected 28 of the 31 breast cancer patients, and gave only three false-positive results (detecting cancer in people who didn't have it).

An identified risk factor for osteoporosis is the intake of excessive amounts of vitamin A. Dietary intake of approximately double the recommended daily amount of vitamin A, by women, has been shown to reduce bone mineral density and increase the chances for hip fractures compared with women who consumed the recommended daily amount (or less) of vitamin A.

Though methadone is often used to treat dependency on other opioids, the drug itself can be abused. Crushing or snorting methadone can achieve the opiate "rush" desired by addicts. Improper use such as these can lead to a dangerous dependency on methadone. This drug now accounts for nearly one-third of opioid-related deaths.
