Clients who are prescribed medications with iodine may be instructed to stop the medications for 2 weeks prior to the scan. If receiving intravenous technetium for the scan, the client does not need to be kept on a nothing by mouth order. The client should not be instructed to eliminate all salt from the diet. The client may be instructed to discontinue all thyroid medication for 4 to 6 weeks prior to the scan.
