Polio was an epidemic in the 1940s and 1950s but has largely been eradicated through immunization with oral live trivalent virus vaccine. It is estimated that nearly 25 to 50 of the estimated 440,000 people in the United States who had contracted the disease are reexperiencing acute manifestations.
