Answer to Question 1

Correct Answer: 1, 3, 4
Nursing care to prevent and treat atelectasis is directed toward airway clearance. The patient with atelectasis should be positioned on the unaffected side to promote gravity drainage of the affected segment. Frequent position changes, ambulation, coughing, and deep breathing should be encouraged. Unless contraindicated, fluid intake should be encouraged to help liquefy secretions. Oxygen and antibiotics are not indicated in the treatment of atelectasis.

Answer to Question 2

Correct Answer: 1, 3, 4, 5
Nursing care of the patient with bronchiectasis is similar to that for patients with other obstructive lung diseases. Airway clearance is a primary problem, as is ineffective breathing pattern. Other problems include impaired nutrition and inability to provide self-care. Fluid balance is not a potential problem for the patient with bronchiectasis.
