Answer to Question 1

Correct Answer: 1

The patient demonstrates anger and abusive behavior when unable to obtain an illegal substance. This information should indicate to the nurse that the patient has a substance abuse problem. The best response for the nurse to make is to ask the patient if he has considered seeking treatment for this behavior. The nurse should not comment on the patient's number of friends. Asking if the patient is argumentative at work could incite the patient's anger and abusiveness. Asking the patient about his family could incite the patient's anger.

Answer to Question 2

Correct Answer: 1

Because drug users are often rebellious against social norms and engage in risky behaviors such as stealing, the nurse should assess the patient for drug and alcohol abuse. Cardiovascular disease and respiratory disease are not usually manifested by engagement in risk-taking behavior. The patient may or may not have a mental health disorder. This type of disorder might be assessed while assessing for drug and alcohol abuse.
