Answer to Question 1

Answer: 2

1. Good skin care is an important aspect of care, but not the priority.
2. The thyroid is in the neck. Response to surgery will be edema in the neck and/or hemorrhage, both of which would threaten the client's airway. Maintaining the airway is the top priority postoperatively.
3. Urine output is important but not the priority.
4. The nurse monitors for edema around the airway, not peripherally.

Answer to Question 2

Answer: 2

1. The adrenal glands are located on the kidney so neck swelling is not likely.
2. The client is monitored for Addison's crisis, which is a life-threatening occurrence and is characterized by hypotension, rapid pulse, weakness, and confusion.
3. Weight gain is seen in clients with Cushing's disease.
4. Depression could occur later on in the recovery process, but it is seen more often in those with Cushing's disease.
