Answer to Question 1

Answer: 2

1. A sputum specimen is necessary for a culture and sensitivity test. Blood cultures may be drawn when the client is also suspected of having septicemia.
2. The culture is usually obtained in the morning, when there is more fluid in the lungs.
3. The concentration of sputum is lower throughout the day because the client is moving and coughing.
4. To obtain an accurate culture, a sputum specimen for the lungs, not from nasal secretions, is necessary.

Answer to Question 2

Answer: 3

1. Exercise is not needed prior to the test.
2. Deep breaths will not affect the test.
3. The test requires that the client be n.p.o. except for water for 8 hours prior to the test.
4. Voiding before the test is not necessary.
