Answer to Question 1

The
American Medical Association and many state medical associations have voiced
concerns that this is not the proper role of physicians, but have not revoked medical
licenses. Still, many physicians who have participated in executions seem to go to
extremes to keep their participation secret, such as hiding during the actual execution
and insisting on payment in cash. When the identity of some physicians has become
known, they can find themselves the subject of relentless pressure to withdraw from
participation. Analyze philosophically whether a physician can ethically participate in the
execution of a convicted criminal.

Answer to Question 2

European manufacturers of the drug refuse to import it to the
U.S., as European nations generally object to the death penalty, except in rare
circumstances. Several states are now petitioning the federal government to provide
assistance in obtaining the drugs needed to carry out executions. Research reliable
sources to determine where this controversy stands at present. Then analyze
philosophically the arguments for and against the continued use of these drugs and the
obligation, if any, of the federal government in providing this assistance to state
governments.

Dogs have been used in studies to detect various cancers in human subjects. They have been trained to sniff breath samples from humans that were collected by having them breathe into special tubes. These people included 55 lung cancer patients, 31 breast cancer patients, and 83 cancer-free patients. The dogs detected 54 of the 55 lung cancer patients as having cancer, detected 28 of the 31 breast cancer patients, and gave only three false-positive results (detecting cancer in people who didn't have it).
