The images in an x-ray appear in various shades of black, white, and gray that correspond to the density of various tissues. Areas of low density are said to be radiolucent. An example is an air-filled space that shows up black on an image. Areas of high density are said to be radiopaque. An example of this is bone, which shows up white on the image.
