Thrush is an oral infection, caused by the yeast Candida albicans, which coats the tongue and oral mucosa. It is common in infants, but is also seen in immunocompromised patients with AIDS because they have a diminished immune response. It is also commonly seen when antibiotic drugs kill normal bacteria in the mouth, allowing overgrowth of Candida albicans. Thrush is also known as oral candidiasis. It is treated with oral antiyeast drugs.
