Acne vulgaris occurs during puberty. The sebaceous glands produce large amounts of sebum on the forehead, nose, chin, shoulders, and back. It forms comedoes, pustules, and papules, but there are no dilated blood vessels. The oily sebum enlarges the pores and creates a comedo or blackhead. Bacteria on the skin form pustules or whiteheads. Acne rosacea occurs in middle-aged patients, only on the face. The sebaceous glands produce large amounts of sebum. There is blotchy erythema, dilated superficial blood vessels, and pustules.
